Youth Services: AFLP and Cal-Learn

KCAO News Briefs: February 18 to 24

This week, we want to share the amazing services of our Youth Services Program.

AFLP

The Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) is a free case management program for expectant and parenting youth under 21 years old.

Case managers work one-on-one with each youth to develop important life skills and tools, discover their strengths, work on family planning and achieve their aspirations in life.

Parental consent is not required to enroll in AFLP. Staff respect each youth’s privacy when enrolling in this program. Case managers will meet youth and schedule two meetings a month at a safe and agreed-upon location.

The AFLP program will explore a youth’s specific strengths, values, and goals through challenging and interesting activities that explore what is important to them.

Youth will develop knowledge in:

  • Family planning

  • Education & Work

  • Access to healthcare

  • Healthy relationships

We are currently offering a welcome basket of free supplies related to school, self-care, and baby items for any new and enrolled clients. Each basket is designed specifically for each client’s needs!

If you are interested in being contacted by AFLP staff, if you are a teacher, counselor, or family member; and would like to refer a youth to AFLP, and the youth is aware of the referral please visit kcao.org/aflp

For any additional questions please email Magaly Rodriguez, AFLP Supervisor at magaly.rodriguez@kcao.org

Cal-Learn

The second program KCAO Youth Services offers is Cal-Learn

The Cal-Learn Program provides comprehensive case management to pregnant or parenting teenagers who are 19 years of age or younger, in receipt of CalWORKs, and who do not have a High School Diploma or equivalent.

This program aims to promote and encourage self-sufficiency and the completion of high school or the equivalent.

Through the Positive Youth Development (PYD) model of intervention, Cal-Learn emphasizes the promotion of positive youth development, focusing and building on the youth’s strengths and resources to work toward:

  • Improving the health of the pregnant and parenting teen, thus supporting the health of the baby

  • Improving graduation rates

  • Reducing repeat pregnancies

  • Improving linkages and creating networks for pregnant and parenting teens
