October is recognized nationwide as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. First observed in 1987, was launched by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence as a way to bring advocates and survivors together, raise awareness, and push for stronger legislation to protect victims. Over the decades, it has grown into a unifying month of action, remembrance, and community education.
The purple ribbon has since become the symbol of Domestic Violence Awareness Month representing courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending domestic violence. Events like KCAO’s Walk and Resource Fair continue this tradition by fostering awareness and building support systems for those in need.
Through the Barbara Saville Shelter and comprehensive domestic violence services, KCAO provides emergency housing, counseling, advocacy, and resources for survivors and their children in Kings County. The annual walk is not only a chance to raise awareness but also to remind survivors that they are not alone, and that the community stands with them.
The event is free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to register in advance by scanning the QR code on the event flyer or visiting this link Domestic Violence Walk and Resource Fair 2025 — KCAO.
Together, we can take steps toward a safer, more supportive community.
