AFLP Summer BBQ Brings Young Families Together

At KCAO, we believe that strong communities are built through meaningful connection, consistent support, and joyful celebration. That’s why this summer, our Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) hosted a special BBQ event for the incredible youth and young families enrolled in the program.

The Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) is a free, strengths-based case management program that supports expectant and parenting youth under 21 in Kings County. Grounded in a resiliency-based, youth-centered approach, AFLP helps young people set and pursue personal goals while navigating the unique challenges of early parenthood.

Through one-on-one support, AFLP case managers work closely with each youth to:

• Increase social and emotional support

• Build resiliency and life skills

• Improve pregnancy planning and spacing

• Boost educational attainment and employability

• Connect families to vital services and community resources

Ultimately, AFLP aims to improve the long-term life trajectory of both youth and their children—helping them become confident, capable, and connected.

With the smell of burgers on the grill and the sound of laughter in the air, the event created a space for fun, relaxation, and connection. More than just a barbecue, it was a celebration of resilience, growth, and the journey of parenthood.

The BBQ was packed with family-friendly activities and opportunities for youth to unwind and connect with one another. Participants enjoyed classic lawn games like cornhole and volleyball, while others got creative with picture frame decorating and coloring activities.

The AFLP BBQ was more than an event—it was a reminder of how powerful community can be when we come together to uplift and empower young families. Whether through a thoughtful conversation, a creative activity, or a simple shared meal, these small moments add up to lasting impact.

KCAO is proud to continue offering spaces where youth feel seen, supported, and celebrated. We look forward to more opportunities to build up the next generation of resilient families across Kings County.
