National Nutrition Month: TEFAP

Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program administered by the USDA that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost.

Through KCAO, TEFAP also referred to as the “Food Distribution Program,” collaborates at the local level with organizations to address food insecurity among low-income families and individuals in Kings County. Every month the program provides food to 14 distribution sites, ensuring essential food support for numerous families and thousands of individuals.

To be eligible for TEFAP, recipients certify under penalty of perjury that they meet the TEFAP Income Guideline of 235 percent of the current Federal Poverty Level. TEFAP ensures no added barriers to receiving assistance beyond the self-attestation of income.
