May is Community Action Month!

Each May, we celebrate Community Action Month—a time to honor the powerful history, impact, and future of the Community Action movement. For over 60 years, Community Action Agencies across the nation have been on the front lines of the fight against poverty, working to uplift families, strengthen communities, and empower individuals through comprehensive, compassionate services.

At KCAO, Community Action Month is more than just a celebration. It’s a call to action. It's an opportunity to reflect on the work we've done, the lives we've touched, and the collective mission that continues to guide us: helping people and changing lives.

Community Action was born out of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty in 1964. Since then, local Community Action Agencies have provided crucial services tailored to the unique needs of their communities—ranging from housing assistance and food security to early childhood education and weatherization services. What makes Community Action different is its commitment to listening to those we serve and building solutions with the community, not just for it.

As we celebrate the strength, resilience, and heart of the Community Action Network this May, we invite you to join us. Together, we can build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy Community Action Month!

Let’s continue to uplift, support, and stand in action—together.
