ITINs for Taxes

KCAO News Briefs: January 28 to February 3

This week we wanted to shed some light on Individual Taxpayers Identification Number also known as an ITIN.

What is it?

An ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows you to file taxes and claim tax credits.

What are the benefits?

An ITIN is an important step in establishing a financial history for yourself and your family.

An ITIN can also provide access to other resources, such as:

  • Getting your driver’s license

  • Apply for a mortgage to purchase a home.

  • Securing financial aid for college

How to file in 1 easy step

File Form W-7 with your federal income tax return. You can file by mail or by dropping it off at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.

Important things to know.

  • The IRS does not share your information with Immigration Authorities.

  • An ITIN helps establish a public record of earning income.

  • An ITIN does not hurt your chances of getting a green card. The applications for an ITIN and a green card are separate.

  • There is no fee to apply for an ITIN.

  • Your ITIN can expire if you haven’t used it in the last 3 years.

Learn more about tax credits on the CalEITC Website.

Winter Garden Clean-up

KCAO would like to express our sincere appreciation to the volunteers who participated in the Winter Garden Clean-up event, preparing our Community Garden for the upcoming spring season. Despite the slight challenge posed by the rain, we were thrilled by the fantastic turnout and the amount of work we accomplished. As a result of the volunteers' dedication and hard work, the garden beds are now immaculately clean, and we were able to plant peas, potatoes, and onions successfully.

Thank you for your invaluable contribution to the maintenance of our garden!
