Early Head Start Is...

Early Head Start is a Home Based program for pregnant and parenting adolescents and adults. The program provides services to pregnant mothers and children from pregnancy to age 3.

With the assistance of the home educators, parents will carry out education activities with their infant or toddler on a weekly basis. Each home visit will be for 90 minutes with the child and the parent in their home.

Twice monthly, the EHS children and parents come to the EHS Center in Hanford or the Corcoran YMCA for socializations, for 90 minute sessions where the infant or toddler can interact with others in age-appropriate activities lead by the home educators and parents. Transportation is provided to all center-based activities.

Early Head Start Principles

The Early Head Start program is based on a foundation of nine principles.

High Quality means that EHS will develop policies and practices that are founded in the knowledge, skills and professional ethics that include child & family development.

Prevention and promotion of health child development and family functioning begin before conception and continues prenatally, upon birth, and throughout the early years.

Positive relationships and continuity: These include the child, family and staff and recognize the parent-child bond as the child's most significant relationship. The relationship between staff and family is based on respect for the child and family's home culture.

Parent involvement: We support the highest level of parent involvement and partnership. EHS recognizes both parent as the child's primary nurturers.

Inclusions: We welcome and fully include children with disabilities. The individual needs of each child will be evaluated and responded to in a way that builds upon individual strengths.

Culture: Home culture and language of each family is supported.

Comprehensiveness, flexibility, responsiveness and intensity: EHS believes that all families can identify their own needs and strengths, set their own goals, and are capable of growth.

Transitions: EHS is responsible for facilitating a smooth transition from EHS into Head Start or other Child Development Programs.

Collaboration: Collaboration with other agencies maximizes the resources available to families. EHS recognizes that no one program can meet all the families needs, and seeks to build strong alliances with local agencies.
